Job description

About this role

Your Team

Fundamental Equities investment professionals manage portfolios from offices across the Americas, EMEA and APAC, including Tokyo, where the firm is expanding its research capabilities.

Portfolio managers employ a range of investment philosophies across styles, geographies and market capitalizations. The team integrates proprietary fundamental research with portfolio management and quantitative analytics, working in focused, accountable teams to identify market inefficiencies and build risk-efficient portfolios.

Your role and impact

BlackRock’s Fundamental Equities Japan team is seeking a Tokyo-based Research Analyst to conduct independent research on Japanese equities. The analyst will apply strong fundamental research, financial analysis and knowledge of business models to identify attractive investments.

Working closely with portfolio managers and colleagues across the firm, they will develop recommendations for multiple strategies, monitor companies held in portfolios, and attend company meetings, trade shows and conferences as needed. The role offers access to BlackRock’s global asset management network, technology, support and risk management capabilities.

Your responsibilities

  • Identify potential investments in Japan and collaborate with portfolio managers to evaluate and challenge investment theses, ensuring they are supported by robust research and data.
  • Conduct independent company and industry research, monitoring macroeconomic trends, technological developments, regulatory changes and geopolitical factors that may affect portfolios.
  • Attend industry conferences, earnings calls, company meetings and investor events to assess company strategies and adjust recommendations as needed.
  • Prepare clear research reports, presentations and client materials covering key findings, portfolio updates, strategy performance, semi-annual reviews and sustainability theses.
  • Monitor market news and industry dynamics, assessing the potential impact on companies and holdings.
  • Contribute actively to investment discussions, helping establish conviction within the wider research group and influence portfolio strategies.
  • Represent the Japan Equities team, Fundamental Equities and BlackRock.

Your experience

  • Experience in fundamental equity research with strong proficiency in Excel, Bloomberg, Tableau, and other investment analysis tools.
  • Strong financial modelling and valuation skills, including discounted cash flow analysis, comparable company analysis, and interpretation of financial statements.
  • Deep understanding of business models, industry dynamics, competitive positioning, and the key drivers of shareholder returns.
  • Ability to assess companies over the long term through both fundamental analysis and share-price performance evaluation.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex investment ideas clearly and influence investment discussions.
  • High attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate, up-to-date research models and investment assumptions.
  • Independent thinker with a proven ability to contribute effectively within a collaborative investment team and broader information-sharing culture.
  • Functional understanding of generative artificial intelligence tools and their application to investment research workflows.
  • Minimum of four years of equity research experience; buy-side experience is an advantage.
  • Strong educational background with Bachelor’s in finance or economics. MBA or Masters is a plus. CFA or other relevant certifications are preferred.
  • Additional technical skills, such as Python, Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), Structured Query Language (SQL), or similar technologies, would be advantageous.
  • Fluency in Japanese is required. Business-level English is preferred.
