BlackRock provides retirement solutions for over 11 million savers.  Our UK Institutional Client Business (ICB) manages relationships with over 600 corporate and public sector pension funds in defined benefit and defined contribution structures.

Our institutional clients have very specific needs that require genuine partnership. We aim to be that investment partner by listening to our clients, understanding them and by applying our investment expertise across asset classes and markets to solve their needs.

BlackRock’s UK Institutional Defined Benefit Relationship Management team is responsible for increasing and retaining relationships with a large proportion of our Defined Benefit Pension Scheme clients.  These relationships encompass the full remit of the BlackRock platform including LDI, ETFs, indexation, active equities and fixed income, private markets and technology.

Role Summary

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading strategic client relationships, retaining clients and identifying and closing sales opportunities.  There will be a particular focus on buy-out and OCIO opportunities and scaling our relationship management of clients.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategy

  • Assists in defining the strategy for the segment, establishing the key drivers of retention and growth
  • Establishes client plans in conjunction with key stakeholders, including product strategy, stewardship and sustainable investing
  • Implements the cross-selling strategy with key stakeholders and identifies how to increase share of wallet, buy-out and outsourcing opportunities

Relationship Management

  • Manages all relationship management and sales aspects for a portfolio of clients in line with the BlackRock model.
  • Designs and delivers on appropriately created account plans, prioritises effectively, actively manages implementation of mandate changes, potential sales opportunities and defends assets at risk   

Requirements

Whilst an exposure to Defined Benefit distribution would be an advantage, we are most of all looking for an individual who can demonstrate the ability to quickly build rapport and trust, and get to grips with new solutions and products. Strong relationship management skills are a must.  Where you don’t already have pensions experience, you would be expected to quickly develop a broad understanding of the UK pension fund market, investment industry and competitive landscape.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Degree level qualification
  • IMC holder preferred
  • Strong track record in sales and / or relationship management-related role
  • Good understanding of asset classes and markets including equities, fixed income, alternatives and technology

Skills/Competencies:

  • Passion for relationship management
  • Excellent communication skills; highly articulate and able to tailor communication style to the audience
  • Self-starter who can proactively develop large number of deep relationships
  • Strong understanding of client issues, and how to proactively position appropriate capabilities and offer timely solutions
  • Team player – able to demonstrate a collaborative approach to working with peers and lead Account Managers, to share and develop ideas & approaches with a view to enhancing client relationships
  • Ability to build consensus and to influence both internally and externally
  • Ability to prioritise and manage time, workload and projects effectively
  • Culture carrier who can contribute to a high-performance culture
