AI guidance for interviews
At BlackRock, we embrace technology — including AI — across every part of our business. As a candidate, AI can be a helpful tool as you prepare for interviews, organize your thinking and research the firm. However, during your interview conversations, it is important that your responses reflect your own experiences and thinking. This allows us to accurately understand your skills and potential while getting to know you.
Using AI before an interview
Candidates may use AI tools as part of their preparation for the interview process, including brainstorming questions, preparing verbal or written communication, researching BlackRock, reviewing financial concepts and refining their resume/CV.
Examples of appropriate AI use before an interview:
- Brainstorming common interview questions
- Practicing ‘STAR’ response structure
- Helping you articulate your experiences
- Summarizing public articles or financial topics
Using AI during an interview
BlackRock does not permit the use of AI tools during any part of the live interview process, including conversations, technical assessments and video-recorded assessments (e.g., via HireVue). Your answers must reflect your own words, experiences and thought processes. Using AI to generate or suggest responses in real time, read scripts and/or provide content is not permitted, unless explicitly noted otherwise by your BlackRock recruiter. The use of such tools during the interview process may impact your candidacy at BlackRock.
Please note: Certain technical roles may require specified use of AI by the candidate during the evaluation process. Your recruiter will let you know in advance if this is the case for you.
Examples of inappropriate AI use during an interview:
- Having an AI tool listen in on your conversation
- Using tools for real-time prompts
- Using another open device or browser for suggestions
- Typing responses into AI during the interview
- Reading or paraphrasing AI-generated responses in real time
- Submitting work (including coding) you can’t personally replicate or explain
An authentic interview process helps us get to know the real you and better understand what you could accomplish here at BlackRock. As you prepare for your interview conversations, here are some quick tips for showing up as your best self:
- Practice the ‘STAR’ response structure using specific examples from your own experience
- Pause to think — structured reflection is encouraged
- Keep notes minimal
- Share what motivates you and how you approach challenges
If you are unsure about how to use AI appropriately during the interview process, please reach out to your recruiter — we’re happy to clarify expectations. Early careers candidates may also reach out to BlackRockCampusRecruiting@blackrock.com.
