Pre-interview assessment and coding test

What is the pre-interview assessment?

  • The pre-interview assessment is a short video recording that you must submit as part of the application process. You will receive a link to complete your pre-interview assessment after submitting your online application. After a question is posed, you'll have three minutes to prepare and up to 90 seconds to record your answer. The entire process takes less than 10 minutes. You must complete the pre-interview assessment in a single sitting within five days of submitting your online application.

What is the coding challenge?

  • The coding challenge is an online assessment you must complete as part of the application process for our Software Engineering team. It contains coding questions followed by one video question. You may complete the coding questions over the course of five calendar days, and this should take about 60 minutes total to complete. The video question must be completed in one sitting.

How can I complete the pre-interview assessment or coding challenge?

  • Immediately after you submit your application, you’ll receive an email with a link to complete this next step. You can also access the pre-interview assessment or coding challenge via your application portal. Please log into your application portal and click the link that says, “Start Assessment.” This will take you to the platform where you can complete your pre-interview assessment or coding challenge.

If I apply to more than one role, will I be required to complete a pre-interview assessment or coding challenge for each position?

  • Yes. If you select more than one function as part of your online application, you will be required to complete the pre-interview assessment or coding challenge (software engineering) for each function.

Can I retake the pre-interview assessment or coding test once I have submitted it?

  • No. Unfortunately, you can’t retake the pre-interview assessment or coding challenge once submitted.

What language should I use when completing the pre-interview assessment if I apply for a role in a non-English speaking country?

  • If you are applying for a role in which the local language is not English, you are required to answer the first question in that local language and the remaining questions in English. However, if you are applying for roles in our Budapest or Zurich offices, you are not required to speak the local language and should answer all questions in English.

If I don’t complete the pre-interview assessment or coding test by the deadline, will BlackRock still consider my application?

  • No. Your application is considered incomplete if you don’t submit your pre-interview assessment or coding challenge by the deadline and it will automatically be rejected.

If I miss the deadline for my pre-interview assessment or coding challenge, can I withdraw my application and submit another?

  • No. If you don’t complete your pre-interview assessment or coding challenge by the deadline, you cannot reapply. A withdrawn or incomplete application still counts towards your application limit. Please ensure you have the necessary infrastructure (video-enabled device and internet connection) and enough time to complete all steps of the application before submitting.
