[MUSIC PLAYING] ZACH NEWBURGH: At first, when I told people that I worked in finance, they rolled their eyes. My name’s Zach Newburgh. I’m a software engineer on the alternatives team here at BlackRock.
When people think of a typical person in finance, they think of somebody who is egotistical, somebody who’s selfish and privileged and uncaring about other people. That couldn’t be further from the truth here at BlackRock. I found this place to be nothing but supportive and encouraging.
One of my conceptions of working in finance was that I’d be wearing a suit and tie every day. I thought that I would be stuck in cubicles. And if you come to our offices, you’ll see that this entire space is laid out in a way that’s very open-concept.
Bringing together people from different experiences and perspectives and mindsets ends up creating better products. It’s refreshing to see that we’re pioneering in a space that’s often dominated by folks who can often seem not to be progressive. And in a very different way, we’re trying to take a stance and say that, hey, there’s more to business than just profit.
